History of Pleasant Valley
"Pleasant Valley" was started by Arie and Antonia (Toni) Kroeze.
Arie Kroeze was born in Holland in 1924. He came to America in 1952 with $25 in his pocket and dreams of owning his own business. Toni later came to join him from Holland, and together they worked toward their dream. After four years of tireless work, their dream began to take shape.
In 1956 Arie & Toni purchased an apple orchard and Sand Road Orchards was established. Arie later sold the orchard to his brother Alex so that he could devote more time to his dream of owning his own landscaping firm. Pleasant Valley Orchards and Nursery was born in 1961. The nursery, still located on Sand Road next to the orchard, supplied his growing landscaping business and later the garden center in Iowa City. Together with their family, Arie and Toni worked hard to create a business they could be proud of. Pleasant Valley continued to grow and flourish adding new divisions such as the golf course and flower shoppe.
In 1999, the nursery operation was passed on to their son Rich who together with his wife and family continue to keep the essence of Pleasant Valley quality workmanship and excellence alive and growing.
The Kroeze family was very sorry to lose Arie on April 5, 2006. He has left behind a legacy to be proud of, and future generations of the Kroeze family look forward to keeping his dream alive.
